Sofia: I'm Sofia. I've been a nurse for eight years, and I've been thinking about working in Canada. But I keep finding different requirements. Would Canada recognize my qualifications? Would I need examinations or additional training? Could I begin the licensing process before arriving? And even if I qualify to immigrate, would I actually be able to work as a nurse?

Narrator: Global Compass helps internationally trained professionals look beyond immigration eligibility. Sofia can explore potential immigration pathways while learning about professional licensing, credential recognition, and the steps that may be required to practise in a particular province. She can also explore relevant employment opportunities and settlement considerations. This helps her understand that immigration and professional licensing are connected decisions, but they are not the same process.

Sofia: I don't just want to move to Canada. I want to understand how I can continue the career I've worked so hard to build.

What you could do next, and what it could change

Your score is a starting point. Let’s look at the changes your answers let us calculate, what each would involve and which decisions are in your hands. Each example holds your other answers and the assessment date fixed. It is not a prediction of your score after time has passed.

CLB 9 or higher in all four abilities of your first official language

CRS estimate: 335 → 396 (+61 points).

Under the rules from November 3, 2026: 335 → 396 (+61 points).

Federal Skilled Worker selection points: 69 → 72 (+3 points). You would remain at or above the 67-point pass mark; the program’s other requirements still apply.

You can work on this

You reported listening CLB 9, reading CLB 8, writing CLB 8, speaking CLB 8, tested on 2026-06-15.

Language points can change both your language score and the points you receive when language is considered with education or work experience. The estimate above includes those interactions.

How to take this forward
  1. Put your result sheet beside IRCC’s conversion table. The target in this example is listening CLB 9, reading CLB 9, writing CLB 9, speaking CLB 9. Focus preparation on the abilities below that target.
  2. Try a practice test before paying for a new test. Use the approved test and version listed by IRCC, then enter your actual new results to reassess.

Before you commit. Preparation, a test fee and a new result are needed. A higher result is not assured. If your results have expired, this example includes renewing them; changing the level alone would not restore their validity.

French test results at NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities, keeping your English results (French-language rounds also need this)

CRS estimate: 335 → 397 (+62 points).

Under the rules from November 3, 2026: 335 → 397 (+62 points).

Federal Skilled Worker selection points: 69 → 73 (+4 points). You would remain at or above the 67-point pass mark; the program’s other requirements still apply.

You can work on this

Your first official language is English. For the second language, you reported “No”.

This example adds French at NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities while keeping your first-language answers. It shows the effect for your profile, including any points that interact.

How to take this forward
  1. Start with an assessment of your current French level. Compare the gap in each ability with this target before committing to lessons.
  2. Choose a preparation plan you can sustain, check the approved test and its cost, and reassess only after you receive the results.

Before you commit. Starting a language from scratch may take substantial time and money. We have not assessed your learning needs or estimated how long this would take. Your first-language results also need to remain valid.

A provincial or territorial nomination

CRS estimate: 335 → 935 (+600 points).

Under the rules from November 3, 2026: 335 → 935 (+600 points).

Federal Skilled Worker selection points: 69 → 69 (no change). You would remain at or above the 67-point pass mark; the program’s other requirements still apply.

Depends on another decision

You have not confirmed a provincial nomination.

A nomination can change the score substantially, but it is a separate selection process. The gain shown accounts for any additional points already in your estimate.

How to take this forward
  1. Start with the provincial paths in this report and their unresolved requirements. Check the official stream page for whether it is accepting applicants and how it selects them.
  2. Consider only a province where you genuinely intend to live. Check its job, occupation, experience and other conditions before spending money on an application.

Before you commit. You can prepare and apply where the process allows; the province decides whether to nominate you. The size of the points gain says nothing about how attainable a nomination is.

These are separate examples, each starting from the same answers. Do not add the gains together: factors interact and points are capped. Use the “What if” tool to recalculate a combination. A higher score does not guarantee an invitation or approval.

On February 12, 2027 you turn 36, and your age points go from 77 to 72. Age is not something you can change. Keep this date in view when weighing a plan that takes time, alongside the expiry dates of your test results and documents.

0 points

This factor is an announced change. It applies from November 3, 2026, so it is part of the estimate from that day and not of today’s.

On your answers neither your Canadian work experience nor a job offer gives points under this factor.

The most it can give in your situation is 150 points.

Review supporting factors, barriers and assumptions

What’s working for you, and what’s in the way

Here’s what the rules say, based on your answers.

Working for you

  • You appear to have at least 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in the last 3 years in one occupation on IRCC's current lists for the healthcare and social services, STEM, trade, education or transport categories, so rounds for that category could invite you if you are also eligible for FSW, CEC or FST and meet the round's instructions. Confirm the NOC by matching your actual duties to its lead statement and main duties; a lawyer can check this with you in a consultation.
  • You appear to have at least one year (1,560 hours) of continuous paid work in your primary TEER 0 to 3 occupation within the last 10 years, with matching duties.
  • You appear to have approved test results under two years old showing at least CLB/NCLC 7 in all four abilities, the Federal Skilled Worker minimum.
  • You appear to have a Canadian credential or a foreign credential with a valid Educational Credential Assessment, as the Federal Skilled Worker Program requires.
  • Your estimated Federal Skilled Worker selection score is 67 or more out of 100, the pass mark. The estimate is only as accurate as your answers, so check each factor against your documents; a lawyer can review them with you in a consultation.
  • You appear to earn FSW work-experience points: 9 for one year, 11 for 2 to 3 years, 13 for 4 to 5 years, 15 for six or more.
  • Based on your date of birth, you appear to earn FSW age points (12 from age 18 to 35, then one fewer each year to 1 point at 46), counted on your application date.
  • No health condition is reported for you or your family members that would raise a medical inadmissibility concern; the immigration medical exam is still required.
  • No charge or conviction is reported for you or your family members, so criminality does not appear to be a concern; police certificates are still required.
  • No previous misrepresentation finding is reported for you or a family member; every answer and document must stay accurate and consistent with past applications.
  • Based on your date of birth, you appear to earn CRS age points; the most are given from age 20 to 29, falling each year to none at 45.
  • Your education appears to earn CRS points, through a Canadian credential or a foreign credential with a valid Educational Credential Assessment.
  • Your approved first-language test results appear to earn CRS points; higher CLB/NCLC levels in each ability earn considerably more.
  • You appear to earn CRS skill-transferability points by combining education or foreign work with strong language or Canadian work, or a trade certificate with language.
  • You appear to have an immigration Educational Credential Assessment for your foreign credential; it must be under five years old when you apply.
  • You appear to intend to live outside Quebec or, as a nominee, in the province or territory that nominated you, as these programs require.
  • Your settlement funds appear to meet IRCC's amount for your family size, or you appear exempt as someone authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer. Applicants invited under the Canadian Experience Class don't need proof of funds either.
  • Your results appear to be from an approved test (CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core, TEF Canada or TCF Canada) and less than two years old.
  • Your primary occupation appears to be TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3, the levels Express Entry programs accept. Confirm your NOC by matching your actual duties to the NOC lead statement and main duties, not your job title; a lawyer can check this with you in a consultation.

In the way

  • Your current occupation is not in a skilled trade group that the Federal Skilled Trades Program accepts (NOC 2021 Major Groups 72 except 726, 73, 82, 83, 92 and 93 except 932, Minor Group 6320 or Unit Group 62200), so this program may not be open to you unless you have at least 2 years of qualifying work in one of those trades in the last 5 years.

Still need to know

  • Nothing so far from what you told us.

What we assumed

What this assessment took as given. If any of it is wrong, change your answer and we’ll prepare a fresh one.

  • We checked your answers as they stood on October 26, 2026, against the rules in force then. A change announced after that day isn’t included here.
  • You answered "not sure" or "not decided" to 2 questions, so we treated them as not yet known rather than as a "no": What do you expect the work permit to be based on; Are you assessing whether you qualify for a new application under the current Ontario Workforce Priority job-offer criteria, rather than an earlier application, an existing nomination or the self-employed-physician category.
  • You skipped 2 questions, so nothing here relies on them: Tell us a little about your background and what you hope to do in Canada.; Is there anything else you would like us to understand about your goals or your situation.
  • We took your educational credential assessment and your language test results as valid on the day you apply. Key dates above says when each stops counting; after that date the result changes.
  • 2 answers you wrote in your own words were not read by the rules: they only read the questions with set answers. A lawyer reads what you wrote.
  • We used the family size you gave (1) for every amount of money a rule asks you to show.

Dates come from the saved facts and applicable rules. Confirm them against your records.

Key dates

Worked out from the dates you gave us. Check each one against your own documents.

  • June 15, 2028Language test results reach two years old (submit your PR application before this date)
  • March 1, 2030Educational credential assessment (ECA) reaches five years old (complete your profile and submit your PR application before this date, or ask the organization that issued it whether it can re-issue it)

Documents to gather

Based on your answers, these are the documents the government requirements ask you to gather. We’ve grouped them by program so you can work through them.

Economic permanent residence: admissibility

  • Immigration medical exam for applicant and all family membersTo gather

You and all family members, including anyone not coming to Canada, need an immigration medical exam by an IRCC panel physician; Express Entry applicants get it after being invited and before applying. If you live in Canada and had an exam in the last 5 years showing low or no risk, you may be able to reuse it.

Application stage: Confirm the personalized checklist Confirm the application stage against this program’s current personalized document checklist.

  • Employment evidence, and the occupation code your duties have to supportTo gather

Work experience is read against what the occupation's description says, not against your job title: IRCC looks for the lead statement and a substantial number of the main duties, including every essential one. For Canadian work it asks for employer reference letters covering each period you claim, with your work permit and your T4 slips or Notice of Assessment, or other records that substantiate the work, such as a letter of employment, contracts and pay stubs. Time while you were a full-time student does not count. Check that each letter states your duties, your dates, your hours and your pay, and that the duties in it are the duties you actually performed.

Application stage: Application filing Confirm whether this document appears in your personalized checklist after invitation; it is not required from every applicant.

  • Points and eligibility have to be supported by documents that are still validTo gather

Every figure in your estimate rests on a document, and the document has to still be valid on the day you submit. If your score is recalculated below the lowest score in the round you were invited in, IRCC says to decline the invitation; applying anyway can mean a refusal and no refund of the application fee. An expired language result, a lower retest, a job offer that has ended or a nomination that has been withdrawn all lower a score. Check the date on each language result, each credential assessment and each bank letter against the date you expect to submit, and ask for a replacement early where one will be needed.

  • Acceptable settlement funds and proofTo gather

Unless you are exempt, your settlement funds must be your own and available, not borrowed or tied up in property, shown by letters from each bank listing balances, six-month averages and debts. You don't need proof of funds if you're invited under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you're authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer; IRCC's system still asks everyone for a proof of funds document, so in that case you upload a letter explaining why. Keep your funds up to date in your profile, since you may not know ahead of time which program you'll be invited under.

Application stage: Profile creation; Application filing Information may be needed for the profile; document copies follow the personalized application checklist after invitation.

What the supporting records must show

What your records will have to show

Your answers flagged these points to check in your records. We haven’t seen the documents yet; each item tells you what would settle it.

Let’s look at what your records need to show. We’re working from your answers and haven’t seen the documents. Each item explains what may follow if it stays unresolved, and what would settle it. None of it is a prediction about your application, and none of it is scored.

Missing documents and other requirements

  • That the settlement funds a program requires are shown by the recordsNote for your records

You gave the settlement funds available to you as 22000, for a family of 1.

Where a program requires settlement funds, the amount is established by the documents filed rather than by the figure given here, and the figure has to be met on the day it is assessed. Funds the records do not establish, or that are not available to be used, cannot support the requirement.

What settles it: Official letters from every bank or financial institution holding your money, on their letterhead, with their contact details, your name, your outstanding debts, and for each account its number, the date it was opened, the current balance and the average balance over the past 6 months, together with an account of any money that is not yours to use.

No access is granted by downloading this report. Sharing with an advisor requires your separate, explicit permission.

The dashboard, downloadable PDF and consented advisor copy use this same saved assessment. New facts or rule changes require a new version; an earlier version stays intact.

Action ranking: Recorded status deadlines and conflicting evidence come first, followed by missing eligibility facts, applicant-controlled improvements, documents and dependent opportunities. Applicant-reported dates still need document verification. The size of a hypothetical points gain is not a probability or the sole ranking factor. Costs and completion times are not estimated without a source.

This is a starting point, not a decision. It is based on your recorded answers, before document verification. Only the competent government authority can decide an application.

We use Government of Canada and provincial or territorial government pages for immigration requirements and published figures. We calculate your estimates from your answers. Our own guides and Marketplace listings are labelled separately. We never use lawyers’, consultants’, forum or news sites as sources.

Good to know

  • Until November 2, 2026, job offers earn no CRS points. From November 3, 2026, a job offer that is valid under Express Entry and is in an occupation on IRCC's high-wage list earns 50, 70 or 100 CRS points, depending on the occupation's level, and it no longer needs an LMIA; you get these points or your Canadian work experience points, whichever is higher, not both. Even if its occupation is not on the high-wage list, a valid offer can still help with FSW arranged-employment points, the proof-of-funds exemption, FST eligibility and some provincial streams.
  • Express Entry starts with an online profile; you enter the pool only if you meet FSW, CEC or FST, invitations follow CRS rank, and a profile expires after 12 months without an invitation.
  • If invited, you have 60 days to apply, with police certificates and medical exams for you and your family (a recent exam may be reusable if you live in Canada); your language results and ECA must still be valid when you submit, or the application is refused.
  • If a province or territory nominates you, an Express Entry-linked (enhanced) nomination adds 600 CRS points, while a base nomination leads to a separate PR application outside Express Entry.
  • Rules, programs and how people are selected can change, sometimes quickly.
  • Meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee an invitation or an approval.

Which pathways need a closer look?

Sofia, your answers suggest directions worth investigating. Here’s why, and what to do next.

Express Entry and provincial pathways

Current CRS: 335. This is the baseline, not a prediction of selection.

Express Entry: occupation-based category rounds: Worth investigating. Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker Program: Worth investigating.

Immigration eligibility and provincial nursing registration are separate decisions. The regulator decides licensing, examinations and any additional education; a PR assessment is not a nursing licence.

Express Entry: occupation-based category rounds

Worth exploring

Supporting inputs

  • Occupation-based category rounds: 12 months in one listed occupation within 3 years

Eligibility, selection and an officer’s decision remain separate.

Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker Program

Worth exploring

Supporting inputs

  • FSW minimum: one year of continuous skilled work in the primary occupation within 10 years
  • FSW minimum language CLB/NCLC 7 in all four abilities, and grid language points

Eligibility, selection and an officer’s decision remain separate.

The first evidence gaps

FST: occupation must be an eligible skilled trade group

Your current occupation is not in a skilled trade group that the Federal Skilled Trades Program accepts (NOC 2021 Major Groups 72 except 726, 73, 82, 83, 92 and 93 except 932, Minor Group 6320 or Unit Group 62200), so this program may not be open to you unless you have at least 2 years of qualifying work in one of those trades in the last 5 years.

Ontario

Ontario Workforce Priority stream: selection evidence

Ontario scores an expression of interest on its own factors, which are not the federal CRS factors. Its page does not publish the score needed for an invitation, or how candidates are ranked against each other, so a higher score does not show that an invitation or a nomination follows.

This stream does not rank candidates by federal CRS. An invitation is required; none is assumed.

Published selection factors: NOC TEER category; Occupational category; Hourly wage; Ontario work experience; Canadian earnings history; Legal status in Canada; Canadian education credentials; English or French test results; Knowledge of both official languages; Location of the job offer.

British Columbia

Skills Immigration: selection evidence

British Columbia scores a registration on its own factors and invites candidates from a registration pool, publishing a minimum score for each draw on its invitations to apply page. That page also says future high economic impact invitations to apply may be based on different factors, so the score is not the whole of the decision, and nomination remains the province's.

This stream does not rank candidates by federal CRS. An invitation is required; none is assumed.

Published selection factors: Human capital factors; Wage of the job offer; Location of the job offer.

Baseline and conditional alternatives

Baseline CRS 335. French test results at NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities, keeping your English results (French-language rounds also need this): 397. CLB 9 or higher in all four abilities of your first official language: 396.

The French scenario needs qualifying TEF/TCF results at the stated NCLC level. Language improvement is an assumption, not a result already achieved.

Ontario registration: International education and eight years of practice are supplied; Canadian registration is not. British Columbia registration: The same professional background is used for a separate provincial comparison.

Immigration and professional licensing remain separate; neither province’s registration decision is assumed.

Actions identified by the rules engine
  1. Essential: You and all family members, including anyone not coming to Canada, need an immigration medical exam by an IRCC panel physician; Express Entry applicants get it after being invited and before applying. If you live in Canada and had an exam in the last 5 years showing low or no risk, you may be able to reuse it. (Economic permanent residence: admissibility)
  2. Essential: You and family members aged 18 or older need police certificates for each country, other than Canada, where you lived six months or more in a row since age 18 in the last 10 years. (Economic permanent residence: admissibility)
  3. Essential: Work experience is read against what the occupation's description says, not against your job title: IRCC looks for the lead statement and a substantial number of the main duties, including every essential one. (Express Entry: system and pool)
  4. Essential: Every figure in your estimate rests on a document, and the document has to still be valid on the day you submit. (Express Entry: system and pool)
  5. Essential: Unless you are exempt, your settlement funds must be your own and available, not borrowed or tied up in property, shown by letters from each bank listing balances, six-month averages and debts. (Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades Programs)

Check that each letter states your duties, your dates, your hours and your pay, and that the duties in it are the duties you actually performed.

Canadian experience class (CEC): Qualifying work experience
Points and eligibility have to be supported by documents that are still valid

Every figure in your estimate rests on a document, and the document has to still be valid on the day you submit. If your score is recalculated below the lowest score in the round you were invited in, IRCC says to decline the invitation; applying anyway can mean a refusal and no refund of the application fee. An expired language result, a lower retest, a job offer that has ended or a nomination that has been withdrawn all lower a score. Check the date on each language result, each credential assessment and each bank letter against the date you expect to submit, and ask for a replacement early where one will be needed.

Acceptable settlement funds and proof

Unless you are exempt, your settlement funds must be your own and available, not borrowed or tied up in property, shown by letters from each bank listing balances, six-month averages and debts. You don't need proof of funds if you're invited under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you're authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer; IRCC's system still asks everyone for a proof of funds document, so in that case you upload a letter explaining why. Keep your funds up to date in your profile, since you may not know ahead of time which program you'll be invited under.

Note

A written offer is not by itself entitlement. From November 3, 2026 an officer has to be satisfied that a qualifying job offer is genuine: that the employer is actively engaged in the business the offer is made for, that the offer reflects its reasonable employment needs, that the employer can reasonably meet the terms, that you are qualified and able to do the work and likely to accept and carry it out, and that the employer has followed employment and recruitment law. An offer that is revoked no longer qualifies, and a work permit on its own is not a job offer. Where you or a family member owns part of the employer or takes part in the hiring, expect those questions to be examined closely, and keep the incorporation, financial and recruitment records for the position to hand.

Note

The area you named is one of the partner communities in Ontario’s Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) round, which runs to the end of 2027 and sets aside nomination spaces for communities with a critical need for workers. This is not a separate application and not a decision about you: Ontario considers you through its nominee program, and that program’s requirements still decide whether you qualify. Ontario draws each community as a census division defined by Statistics Canada rather than by a city limit, so check the boundary for the town you have in mind. Ontario has not published how many spaces this round holds, or how they are split between the six communities.
